Electric Radiant Floor Heating

Electric radiant systems use thin heating cables or mats embedded under tile, stone, or engineered flooring. Each room or zone operates independently with its own thermostat. Electric radiant is simpler to install, requires no boiler or plumbing, and is ideal for adding warmth to specific spaces rather than serving as the primary heat source for a whole home.

Electric radiant is the right choice for: bathroom floors (the most common application), kitchen tile floors, mudrooms and entryways, small additions, and remodels where adding hydronic plumbing is impractical. Electric radiant heating mats have 25-year expected lifespans and most manufacturers offer 25-year warranties.

Is radiant heat more efficient than forced air?

Generally yes. Radiant systems lose no energy to duct leakage (which costs forced-air systems 20-30 percent of energy), can operate with lower supply temperatures (lower boiler temperatures = higher condensing boiler efficiency), and deliver comfort at lower air temperatures (people feel warm at 65°F with warm floors but need 70°F+ with forced air). Properly designed hydronic radiant systems typically use 10-30 percent less energy than equivalent forced-air systems.

How quickly does radiant floor heat respond to thermostat changes?

Slower than forced air. Radiant systems have thermal mass, the floor itself must heat up before delivering warmth to the room, and it stays warm after the heat call ends.
