Aluminum branch wiring was installed widely from approximately 1965 through 1975 as a cost-saving alternative to copper. AlumiConn is significantly less expensive than COPALUM (typically $5-$10 per connection point in materials), faster to install, and accepted by the CPSC as effective mitigation. Most cost-effective comprehensive mitigation approach for many situations.
Option 4: Targeted Outlet/Switch Replacement (Partial Mitigation)
Replacing standard outlets and switches with devices specifically rated for aluminum wire (marked CO/ALR) provides better connections than standard devices, but does not address splice connections elsewhere in the system. Modest improvement that may be appropriate for some situations but rarely the comprehensive answer.
Option 5: Phased Approach (High-Risk First)
Some homeowners address the highest-risk circuits first, typically kitchen and laundry circuits where high current draws produce the most stress on aluminum connections, and plan additional work over time.
